In my opinion almost every website like this one (with content like tutorials, icons, etc) is part of a clique. Below is how I would classify them and you'll notice the classifications may be a bit strange. Remember that any website can belong to one or more of these cliques and that this article may sound a bit silly but try to relate each one to websites you know and I don't know, maybe it'll make more sense.
Elite: This one involves a lot of sites like vejc-design, neverending-smile, instantrock, rewindd, etc. These websites I would call elite because almost everyone looks up to some of these websites. For the most part they update and take care of their website but even if they don't then hundreds if not thousands will still keep visiting to see if they've updated, blogged or to find some content they want. These are also websites that have mostly the same affiliates and don't usually accept any new ones. These ones have the same kind of content like icons, myspace layouts, tutorials, etc. Another thing about them is the ones with a lot of comments like vejc-design tend to not reply to them but the ones that do well congrats! So the way I see it is the "elite" group is the one that everyone wants to be like and everyone wants to be affiliated with them.
Wanna be's: These are the ones I feel very much sorry for and i'm very sorry if your one of them. They will update and blog very often and in my opinion it's actually too often because it makes you seem like you feel you're not doing good enough, like you're trying to impress people by adding 100 icons everyday. Remember the old saying that quality is better than quantity well it's true and this is why I urge some people to do a content clean up once in awhile. So I think they work too hard and need to focus on quantity but I also think they should try to be themselves when making their website.
Nerds: They rock. Truly, they do because they are the ones who go through the bother of validating their website and making sure it's in tip top condition. They update and blog regularly and excuse my language but they work their ass off to maintain a very nice and presentable website. Don't be offended if you think you do these things but you don't think you're a nerd, I couldn't really think of a better name and besides nerds are awesome :) These website are often a lot more advance than people like me and they're the ones who you can google and who you know really love what they're doing.
Noobs: This actually quite different to the wanna be's. The wanna be's often do what they should, they are usually alright at making graphics. But the noobs are people on piczo or freewebs who apply for affiliation at an elite site. They're the ones with poor layout making and coding experience and who just aren't very advanced. But that's okay you can get better and I'm sure you will just keep on working at it. The noobs will sometimes also have a glitter site where they take a million glitters put it on a page with a shoutbox and they're done. One quality I find they share with the wanna be's is sometimes the poor graphics, but in the noobs case it's just because of lack of experience when the wanna be's I find make too much and therefore don't make quality content.
Middleclass: This what supports all the other guys. The middle class people aren't noobs or wanna be's, but of course for the most part they want to be part of the elite. They really enjoy making their website which is easy to read, nicely presented, with a decent layout and everything looks fine if not better. Most of them update about once or twice a week, sometimes more. Then some of these people are semi-elite so they feel they don't need to be updating too much. They try their best to be part of the elite and some will accept them as affiliates and others won't, they are what makes for most of the content, reviewing, icons, etc, type websites.
