color overlay
This is a really cool tutorial it's one of the first things i learnt on photoshop. It's used either for when you have a dark picture or a darker part of a picture that you want to be lighter or when you just want your picture to have tint. I'm using a picture of my cat in my window.
1. First open the picture you want to use.

2. Create a "new layer". One way of doing so is by going to layer > new layer.

3. Now pick the color you would like the overlay with which mean lets say you pick green the the overlayed picture would have a tint of green.

4. Now select the paint tool and the appropriate size and start coloring a light color on the dark part of the picture. Then select a different darker color and color the rest. Or you can color another way if your picture isn't dark. Also make sure that in the bottom right box with the layers on it that "layer 1" or whatever you named your new layer is highlighted.

5.This is what mine look like after i've painted it. although it doesn't have to look at all like mine.

6. Now go to to the top of the window where it says filter then click blur then click gaussian blur. You blur it as much as you like because this tutorial is not exact it really depends on the picture and what you want out of it.
7. right above all your layers on the bottom right hand side it says normal. click the arrow to select soft light. (this is part of the blending options). You can also do this if you right click on a layer and click on blending options.

So now your done if you don't understand anything said in this tutorial please ask me.
