saving

This page will tell you in my opinion the best saving methods for different files and why. I highly recommend reading this tutorial especially if your a beginner with photoshop. AT the bottom you'll see some tips for saving.

jpg - A very common way of saving and very good because it's quite small and it's compatable with just about everything. Although you need to make sure you get the best results so look for that paragraph on the bottom of the page. Never save a transparent image with this format because the transparent parts will turn white.

gif - This is a kind of file that isn't good to save as if you saving a big layout or something, I find it tends to create a lot of noise in the image. But you need to save all animation as this, well I believe there is another kind of file you can save as but gif would be the best for small animation (ex: bullets, icons, buttons) and also gif is compatable with just about everything. To see how to save as animation scroll down. Another thing that you should know is that you can save a transparent image as gif but the downside is that after if you want to edit it you can't duplicate, the layer, add one or anything.

png - Very good format especially if your concerned about quality instead of size. It will have great quality which is why i recommend this over gif if it's not animation but if you don't need a format made for transparent pictures then i would go for jpg since it has the same quality. The only thing I use this for is for making pngs but that's just me. Another thing is that it's alos compatible with paint incase that helps.

psd - Okay well obviously this is a good format, basically it was everything all the others do until you save it as soemthing else. So mostly this is just used for the progress of an image or animation. It's quite a bit format about one and half times as big as a jpg.

tips

Save as a .jpg but keep the quality

Open your file and do whatever you want then when you save, save as jpg.

but then a little box will pop up and put for the quality 12 because that's the maximum now save and your done!

Save an animation as .gif

So do whatever you want with the picture then go to File > Save for Web. Now change around the setting, give it more colors if you want, and then save.
